Family meeting agenda

A good family meeting agenda is short and starts on a positive note: everyone shares an appreciation, the family checks how last week's plan went, walks through this week's calendar, works on one problem together, sorts out chores, and ends by planning something fun. Fifteen to thirty minutes once a week is enough, and with young kids shorter is better.

Kids under about 7? Run a 15-minute version with just appreciations, this week's calendar and the fun plan, and add a problem to solve once they're used to it.

Questions people ask

How long should a family meeting be with young kids?
With kids under about 7, keep it to 15 minutes or so and stick to appreciations, the calendar and the fun plan. You can tackle a problem once they're used to the routine. It's better to end while everyone's still cheerful than to push through a long list.
What if my kids don't want to come to family meetings?
Keep it short, start with appreciations, end with the fun plan, and let kids take turns running it or taking notes with a simple meeting notes template. Kids are more likely to show up when the meeting is where their own topics get heard, so make sure an issue they added to the list actually gets discussed.
Do parents get the final say in a family meeting?
On some things, yes, and it's fine to say so up front. Safety, money and bedtimes may be parents' decisions, while chores, weekend plans and how to fix a recurring problem can be decided together. Being clear about which is which avoids kids feeling the meeting is just for show.
Should we write down what we decide?
Yes, even briefly. A sheet on the fridge with the calendar, chores and what you agreed to try settles most "you never said that" arguments, and it's what you check at the start of next week's meeting.
