Union membership meeting

Union meeting agenda template

A union local's membership meeting usually follows the order of business in its constitution or bylaws: call to order, roll call of officers, minutes, new members, correspondence, the financial report, officer and committee reports, a bargaining and grievance update, unfinished and new business, good and welfare, and adjournment. The minutes record motions and votes, the financial report and grievance status by number, not members' names.

Questions people ask

What is good and welfare in a union meeting?
It's the open part of the meeting near the end where members can raise concerns, share news, announce condolences or make suggestions for the good of the local. It usually comes after new business and before adjournment. The minutes note each topic in a line and who will follow up.
Should union minutes include members' names in grievances?
Most locals keep names out of the membership minutes and refer to each grievance by number, department and step. The full file stays with the stewards and officers. Minutes get read aloud and passed around, and a grievant's name in them can cause problems at work.
What decides the order of business at a union meeting?
Your local's constitution and bylaws, and often the international union's constitution, set the order of business, quorum and how minutes are approved. Federal and state labor law can also apply to things like elections and finances. Follow those documents first. This page isn't legal advice.
